DRS Technologies UK
Rugged where you need it, when you need it
DRS Technologies UK Ltd (“DRS UK”) is part of DRS Technologies
Inc, a leading supplier of integrated products, services and
support to military forces, intelligence agencies and prime
contractors worldwide. DRS is the world’s largest supplier of
ultra-rugged computing, with major contracts both in the UK and
USA.
DRS TechnologiesUK is a world leader in the design, development,
manufacture and through-life support of rugged and ultra-rugged
computers, displays and associated peripheral equipment for
demanding military environments. DRS UK is located in Farnham,
Surrey where it employs 80 staff across a wide range of
disciplines.
Key Capabilities
DRS Technologies UK’s key capabilities include:
- Rugged and ultra-rugged computing for land vehicles, military
aircraft and naval combatants
- Vehicle and platform electronics infrastructure
- Advanced vehicle crew stations and workstations
- Vehicle system integration
- Thermal imaging solutions for military vehicles
- Air EW threat testers and simulators
DRS Technologies UK delivers integrated vehicle electronics
architectures and has a growing capability with such technologies
as video distribution, MilCan, VxWorks and Health and Usage
Monitoring Systems (HUMS). As a result, DRS Technologies UK can
provide a complete vehicle or platform electronics infrastructure
upon which systems integrators can build scalable vehicle
systems.
To complement its core skills and capabilities, DRS Technologies
UK is also capable of obtaining advanced technologies from its
sister companies in the USA as either stand-alone solutions, or
part of a complete system or sub-system. That provides UK and
European customers with access to a wide range of highly
competitive products from a single interface within DRS.
DRS Technologies UK’s core engineering strength lies in its
ability to engineer cost-effective rugged and ultra-rugged,
commercial, off-the-shelf products and system solutions. These
products are applicable to each primary military platform, namely
land vehicles (tracks and wheels), military aircraft and naval
combatants.
DRS Technologies UK has a substantial installed base of
ultra-rugged computers and displays, having supplied over 13,000
Bowman UDTs. This was augmented in 2009 by the award of the Bowman
Capability Insertion Programme (BCIP 5.4) upgrade to the whole
Bowman computing capability. In addition, DRS Technologies UK
has supplied key elements of the Challenger 2, CVR(T) and Warrior
Platform BISA (P-BISA) architecture in the form of real-time
computing, commander’s crew stations and MilCan infrastructure.
Another area of significant capability for DRS Technologies UK
is the provision of latest generation Driver’s Vision Enhancer
(DVE) systems for military vehicles. With contracts covering
Warrior, Bulldog, CVR(T) and now Husky, DRS has an installed base
of 700 systems in the British Army. DVE enables driving at night or
in poor visibility from under armour and is an effective
enhancement to vehicle operations.
DRS TechnologiesUK has a well-developed range of high
performance ultra-rugged displays and workstations for military
vehicle applications. Selected by systems prime contractors for
elements of the Warrior Capability Sustainment Programme (WCSP) and
Future Rapid Effect System Specialist Vehicles (FRES SV), all units
have very high resolution displays, touch screen overlays and
multiple data and video interfaces. Designated the CTD and CTW
ranges (Commander’s Tactical Displays and Workstations), they are
currently available in 10-, 13- and 17-inch sizes, and the smaller
display is BOWMAN-compatible, allowing multi-function use in tight
working environments.
In conjunction with the CTD and CTW ranges above, DRS
Technologies UK has developed a range of UK IP-based technology for
video switching and control. This provides the basis for
implementing low-risk and affordable vehicle system integration for
both new and legacy platforms, known as iVIS or Integrated Vision
System.
DRS Technologies UK has developed its own range of modular,
multi-function naval consoles known as OPUS. These have been
supplied as part of numerous Royal Navy and international combat,
sonar and ship control systems, including a significant export
contract in 2009 for a Minehunter upgrade programme.
The company has a successful track record in the delivery of
rugged computing for airborne, flight line and mission planning
applications. Today, it is involved in the development and supply
of a range of air system products in support of tactical datalink,
ESM, mission planning, and flight line maintenance for air
platforms including the RAAF Wedgetail, RAF Nimrod and British Army
Apache.
