Transport

The future of the transport sector around the world is an exciting one. The continual improvement in technology to address challenges such as capacity, traveller experience and, importantly, environmental sustainability, mean that continual innovation is going to be necessary. It is in these ‘application of science and engineering’ environments that Finmeccanica thrives; as a Group, we are delivering the transport of today and stand ready to deliver the transport of tomorrow.

Owing to the unique combination of geographical reach, depth of technology development, provision of systems and platforms across the domains of air, land (road and rail), and sea – plus the supporting infrastructures – Finmeccanica and its operating companies have developed a well deserved reputation as a valued transport solution provider.

As a group, Finmeccanica has proven experience at all levels of the Transport industry’s value chain, ranging from the provision of micro sensors into the open market right through to acting as the prime contractor for entire infrastructure provision projects. Covering the entire lifecycle – from requirement specification through to continued operation and support – Finmeccanica delivers reliable, affordable solutions.

Road

Recent projects have seen Finmeccanica develop and deploy infrastructure across road networks to monitor and manage traffic flows, provide a ‘security ring’, and collect usage fares in national and urban settings. We also act as a technology and systems provider in areas such as communications, satellite tracking and vehicle automation.

Rail

In this sector, Finmeccanica has acted as prime contractor / systems integrator for complete infrastructure provision projects right down to the signalling provider based on leading international standards such as the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS).

  • SignallingWe are actively developing and implementing advanced signalling technologies for the UK rail and metro infrastructure industry. This involves offering highly efficient and cost-effective solutions for the operation and maintenance of all types of rail systems and associated applications. With a broad portfolio of products successfully proven in the global market, we are well placed to contribute to the increasing use of high technology solutions demanded by UK rail customers.
  • Integration – Finmeccanica’s international presence as a leader in the provision of integrated capability for Mainline and Mass Transit railways gives us an enviable global track record in the successful delivery of business-critical technology investment programmes in complex, highly regulated, secure, safety-critical transport domains. We are committed to providing the most cost-effective transport solutions empowered by state-of-the-art technology from across Finmeccanica, combined with best-of-breed niche capability from an extensive supply chain.
  • Business Transformation and Programme Management – Reducing costs whilst improving services has become a widespread requirement in recent years across most organisations, including those in the rail industry. Business transformation is key to achieving this and assisting organisations through the change process. We have a proven technique for managing complex high profile programmes, and provide the foundation for large-scale systems integration. Our Programme Delivery Blueprint fits naturally within a programme governance framework, describing the organisation, people, processes, information, rules and technology, as well as the intermediate and final Business Transformation states.
  • Systems EngineeringWith the complexity of railway systems continually increasing, new opportunities have led to increased challenges for organisations to deliver systems within time and budget, whilst reducing risk of late/costly design changes and negative impact on service delivery. The process includes designing for sustainability, affordability and integration – key issues for the upgrade and design of any railway system. We utilise proven and robust systems engineering methodologies to manage, design and control risks, with continual focus on the operational needs of our customers. This enables us to meet client requirements for scope, quality and budget, ensuring a more comprehensive and timely delivery of the required outcomes and benefits.
  • Through Life Management Planning –  A Through Life Management Plan is the single source of strategic management information for the project, providing access to more detailed information required by the Project Team to manage their activities throughout the project’s lifecycle (including disposal). We help clients produce Through Life Management Plans which provide high level information on the resource and cost of managing the project through the life of the project.
  • Planning and Simulation – Our planning and simulation capability is based on more than 30 years’ engineering experience. We have in-depth knowledge of planning and simulation solutions, and work with the rail industry in this area to deliver key projects.
  • Training and SupportWe offer a complete training service to the rail industry, ranging from requirement capture, through solution and curriculum development, to training delivery and support. This can be done for specific equipments at one end of the spectrum, through to large organisations with a broad, varied curriculum seeking to deliver more effective and efficient training.

Air

In addition to the design, manufacture and support of a number of aircraft types, Finmeccanica and its companies also provide a variety of products, services and technologies for broad applications including air traffic control, infrastructure security, cyber protection, communications and geo location.

  • Air Traffic Control Sensors – Our wide range of Air Traffic Management (ATM) solutions and systems covers every requirement for primary and secondary en-route and terminal airspace surveillance. All our Air Traffic Control sensors are fully compliant with the latest International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and recommendations, and are designed for remote monitoring and reconfiguration.
  • Navigation and Landing Aids – Through our ATM and control solutions, we can help ensure customers are able to smoothly move from traditional navigationl aids (Navaids) and landing systems to new satellite navigation products through close co-operation with the ATM and airport systems business unit. We are a premier supplier of systems, equipment and services to aid the in-flight navigation, landing and ground movements of aircrafts under all visibility conditions.Offering a complete line of ground-based equipment for all phases of aircraft movement, we design, manufacture, install, implement and support ground-based radio navigation and landing aids, for use in both US and international applications.

Sea

Through partnerships, Finmeccanica provides platforms in this domain. However, the balance of the Group’s capabilities reside in the supporting systems such as vessel management, navigation, ship-to-shore communication, and port management systems including security aspects.

  • Maritime Electronics – We are the UK market leader for maritime electronics.  With 18 regional offices, we supply, install, service and support a complete range of products, working respected manufacturers. Our experience and skills, gained from over 100 years in the industry, ensure we work closely with our customers to identify suitable solutions, provide the best products and offer the most comprehensive after-sales support available.
