Job Description
In this role you will be required to conduct, develop and document the structural engineering associated with the mechanical concepts, models and detailed designs within the Mechanical Engineering Function at Selex ES Ltd.
The role will predominantly cover (but not exclusively) the Electronic Warfare Line of Business at the Luton site, but will support the requirements of the other sites (particularly Basildon) and Lines of Business where required.
Other activities will include:
- Assuming accountability for the structural integrity of all products which are covered under a DDP.
- Championing mechanical engineering best practice in order to achieve optimum structural perfomance and deliver to the IPT's requirements.
- Providing technical guidance, leadership & direction on critical technical problems.
- Setting standards for behaviours, technical leadership, quality, schedule and cost adherance.
- Developing and coaching engineers in terms of technical leadership, leading edge technology, self-confidence and simultaneous engineering.
- Contributing to Peer Reviews and Design Reviews.
Key Responsibility Areas
- Assess mechanical design for strength and safety against regulatory and customer requirements, and document accordingly (powerpoints, stress reports, stress memos, etc)
- Provide advice on structural design improvements, where necessary
- Verify and approve design data and change notices for equipment
- Support the selection of manufacturing technologies and materials based on a sound understanding of the mechanical engineering of the product
- Input recommendations to the Design Integrity team who assess safety for air worthiness
- Mentor and develop members of the team, in order to provide enhanced capability from the function
- Support and facilitate design and product reviews, and sign off release of mechanical designs from a stress perspective, in accordance with business and industry standards
- Build effective cross functional relationships within local site, across site and internationally within the group and suppliers
- Support the management team in process and departmental improvement and development initiatives
Academic
- Technical or science degree qualified (or equivalent) with relevant experience in stress and vibration engineering.
- Professional recognition as a Chartered Engineer or proven associated competencies is desirable.
Skills
- Proven knowledge of structural analysis and previous experience in developing equipment for extreme operating environments is essential.
- Experience (or at least awareness) of environmental testing methods for design verification is essential.
- Experience of working with a team of mechanical engineers in the successful design, development and test of electronics packaging is desirable.
- Knowledge and experience in the design and verification of aerospace equipment is desirable.
- Technical understanding of dynamic and static behaviour of bolted and welded assemblies.
- Competent in the use of hand calculations to validate CAD models (i.e. bolted assemblies, hoop and bending stresses, etc).
- Competent in the use of Finite Element Analysis, preferably Siemens Nx/Nastran and Pro/Mechanica, with a proven knowledge of academic best practice.
- Knowledge of Pro/Engineer and PDMLink to access design data within the database and to make simplified representation of complex assemblies.
- Good verbal and written communication skills - there will be a high level of interface with both internal and external customers.

- Problem solving & Simultaneous Engineering - structured logical approach to investigate issues and problems in an effective cross-functional manner.
- Delegation - ability to effectively delegate tasks to appropriate senior engineers/ engineers and provide required level of support.

Intrinsic Job Factors
This is an office based role using display screen equipment and working full time hours, which can often be in a demanding environment. As part of this role you will be expected to travel in the UK and possibly abroad, including overnight stay as part of this travel. Although based at Luton, frequent travel to the Basildon office specifically, is anticipated. Working to tight deadlines either on a regular or ad hoc basis will be required.
