Job Description

To act as the focal point for engineering for the HLS/CNI LoB (part of S&SS Division) and through well managed, multifunctional engineering teams ownership of all aspects of the engineering activities for both bids and current account.

 

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Engage with customers, sales and Capability to produce compelling, affordable engineering system designs for complex bids in the civil market environment.
  • Challenges and validates estimates and schedules, including forward load requirements (Bids and current account). Owns the engineering solution and costs for bids.
  • Delivery of the overall engineering solution to time, cost and performance across all projects
  • Through both LoB owned resources and engagement with Central Engineering, provide well managed engineering teams under the leadership of Project Engineering Manager/Leads as appropriate.
  • Ensures core engineering processes are appropriately tailored to the non-military (civil) market environment.
  • Ensures that engineering plans, showing key milestones and interdependencies are created and maintained for all projects within the LoB.
  • Identifies, evaluates and mitigates engineering project risks.
  • Works across our transnational organisation to build relationships and promotes a culture of best practice sharing and knowledge exploitation across IPTs.
  • Ensures/verifies that for each bid/project, the design solution complies to all design requirements, including customer specification, legislative, contractual and product/system safety.
  • Supports project reviews, phase reviews, design reviews and tender vets.
  • Ensure critical factors such as Unit Production Cost, mass, power consumption, etc. are defined, tracked and managed for all projects within the LoB.
  • Ensure that preventative action is taken to address non-conformances.
  • Manage interface between engineering and operations where appropriate.
  • Personally coach and mentor his direct team and other engineers and act as a role model for appropriate behaviours.

 

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge

Degree qualified in an engineering discipline. Typically meets the requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer with the Likely to be an active member of a relevant Professional Body.

  • Demonstrable experience and success within their previous role.
  • Will have built up well-rounded engineering experiences in all of the phases of the lifecycle across many projects or programmes in a number of engineering domains.
  • Detailed knowledge of design methodologies and techniques in all engineering disciplines from system level to sub assembly level.
  • Additional experiences in related but non-engineering functions such as Project Management, Supply Chain Management etc.
  • Experience of customer/ supplier relations and working within IPTs.
  • Will have had considerable experience in project and engineering management.
  • Good Commercial acumen e.g. able to actively contribute to development broader elements of a proposal and negotiating a contract.
  • Experienced key contributor to complex bids of varying scale.
  • Experienced engineering lead for mid/large sized projects
  • Previous experience in the bidding and execution of large scale civil security systems and/or critical communications programmes.
