Job Description
The Electronics Engineering discipline at Selex ES in Edinburgh requires a Lead Firmware Engineer to Lead Firmware/FPGA design activities on both a Radar Processor (Px) and Radar Receiver (Rx) Line Replaceable Items (LRIs) within an Airborne Radar Integrated Project Team (IPT).
The successful candidate will have a track record in the design of complex electronics hardware incorporating Firmware/FPGA.
Team leadership skills, or the potential and willingness to lead a Firmware/FPGA team, is a pre-requisite.
Key Responsibility Areas
Duties include:
- Leading Process and Design Assurance activities for all Px LRI and Rx LRI Firmware/FPGA Designs
- Technical lead activities in the development of the Core (common) Firmware/FPGA Designs for utilisation in both the Px LRI and Rx LRI
- Providing Technical Leadership for the Rx & Px Model Driven Firmware Design activities
- In conjunction with Project Engineering Lead (PEL), translate customer requirements into clear design solutions and specifications in order to ensure technical solutions are robust, innovative and in line with customer and SELEX ES expectations
- Making technical decisions and mitigating technical risk for Firmware/FPGA design activities within the IPT
- Actively contributing to a culture of best practice, knowledge exploitation and process improvement in order to develop longer term capability and expertise within the IPT and across the wider business
- Personally coach and mentor others within the Firmware/FPGA team to ensure clear development of self and team
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge
Qualifications
First or second degree (BSc, BEng, MEng, MSc, PhD, EngD) in Electronic Engineering (preferable) or related science (eg Physics) ideally with a specialisation in Firmware/FPGA and model driven engineering design techniques
Essential Skills:
The following skills and experience are required:
- Broad experience in the design and development of complex electronics systems incorporating FPGA including associated modelling and verification techniques
- Understanding of AESA radar system operating principals with ability to define problems, identify boundaries, interfaces and constraints is desirable
- Experience of FPGA design and test benching
- Experience of Xilinx toolset and design with Virtex FPGA family
- Experience of firmware and hardware design processes in the majority of the lifecycle phases, familiarity with development to RTCA DO-254 is desirable
- Experience of debugging FPGA designs on hardware platforms
- Awareness of Model Driven Engineering tools including MATLAB and Simulink
- Work Package Management and Team Leadership Experience

Intrinsic Job Factors
This is an office-based role using display screen equipment working full time hours which can often be in a demanding environment.
The work within the Captor IPT may require unsupervised access to UK Restricted material and occasional access to UK Secret UK Eyes material, requires full SC clearance.
