Job Description

The work involves the application of mathematical techniques, and is accomplished through interaction with software suites and scripting, ad-hoc coding where necessary, with COTS tools and languages including Perl, FORTRAN and Systems Tool Kit (STK). The post holder is also likely to play a significant role in maintaining and developing in-house tools and implementing a modernisation programme. A solid foundation in the principles and application of mathematics and physics with aptitude for programming and the ad-hoc development of algorithms is required.

 

The MOD requires that candidates be UK nationals. Security clearances are required before being offered the position and commencing work. A current DV will be highly advantageous.

 

 

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Characterisation and assessment of satellite systems to meet customer requirements
  • Application of physical principles, mathematical analysis and numerical manipulation to meet analysis aims
  • Production and delivery of technical reports and presentations based upon analysis and assessments to customer and larger audiences
  • Development and maintenance of software tools, algorithms, techniques and processes, and the execution of a modernisation programme

 

 

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge

 

Essential:

  • Ability to employ degree-standard mathematical techniques to perform analysis: A solid foundation in the principles of maths and physics is required
  • Ability to communicate clearly, through well-constructed technical reports, formal presentations and informal discussions
  • An aptitude for programming and the ad-hoc development of algorithms.
  • An honours first degree in mathematics, science or engineering with high mathematical content

 

Desirable:

  • Understanding of the scientific hypothesis/experiment cycle
  • Mathematical modelling and/or programming experience advantageous
  • Knowledge of (or demonstrable interest in) satellite systems and their operations.
  • A 1st or 2.1 degree classification; Research degree or similar research experience outside academia

 

Intrinsic Job Factors

This is a full-time post based in Whitehall, London. The role is office-based with substantial use of display screen equipment. The post holder would on average spend 10-20% of the working month at meetings elsewhere in the UK, potentially involving overnight stays, and may be asked to undertake a small number of foreign trips, typically to the USA, in each year. There is a continual and varied flow of work, often to short deadlines. As part of a team working in an integrated group with MOD staff the normal working hours are 9 to 5, and standard company flexitime arrangements are not available.
