SELEX Elsag expands Sentinel secure robust mobile
communications
Basildon, 12 October 2011 – SELEX Elsag, a Finmeccanica
company, has introduced two new members of its Sentinel family to
support robust, high capacity communications in challenging
operational environments.
Sentinel Mobile provides secure mobile
broadband access to any user, operating anywhere in the world,
regardless of terrestrial 3G coverage. Based on commercial
off-the-shelf (COTS) hand-held smartphone technologies, Sentinel
Mobile supplies a low-cost, intuitive, easy to use, lightweight 3G
communications capability. It provides secure voice, data and video
streaming via terrestrial 3G networks, Sentinel Mobile stand-alone
networks or to other corporate networks (including the www).
Sentinel Mobile has been designed to provide the operational
flexibility to potentially suit the requirements of both commercial
and government operators, including the military. Potential uses
include secure two way transfer of all types of data, including
voice. Sentinel Mobile provides the capability to achieve secure 3G
communications even when a terrestrial 3G network is
unobtainable.
The user’s mobile communications
device (COTS smart phone, tablet notebook, etc) will operate across
the rapidly deployable, mobile, 3G Sentinel Mobile network to a
central location. From there, with other communications systems can
be achieved via available gateways.
Sentinel Mobile Broadband
Basestation (MBB) system exploits contemporary UMTS/3G
mobile telephony to provide military and paramilitary users with
self-contained, secure, easily deployed data communications, both
within an area of operations and to/from an adjacent secure IP
infrastructure.
The capability has been designed to
provide the operational flexibility to suit the requirements of
defence, commercial and governmental users. Potential applications
include secure two-way transfer of all types of data, including
voice. The use of COTS technologies ensures low-cost initial
provision, reduces maintenance and update costs. User resource
requirements and training requirements are reduced via this readily
expandable system.
