Summary

An experienced software systems architect/technical lead with hands-on experience of software development in JAVA and/or C++ looking for an exciting career in the development of space related applications and services. This is an exciting diverse role supporting projects and the winning of new work by designing and delivering innovative cost-effective solutions to client’s requirements. The role will provide the opportunity to remain close to the delivery of technical work throughout the project execution. The successful applicant will be flexible and be keen to support hands-on software development activities directly where necessary to project needs.

 

Objective

To join our experienced software team developing new web based applications and services within the space domain. Opportunities exist to be involved in all of the key software lifecycle aspects: requirements, design, development and test as well as the winning and shaping of new work.

 

Key Responsibility Areas

The mix of the responsibilities will vary according to assigned projects at the time but will include:

  • Architect / Technical Team Lead on key projects;
    • Responsible for delivery of all technical aspects (Requirements, Design, Implementation, Test and Delivery/Support) of the project to schedule, budgeted effort and quality.
    • Technical point of contact with the client
    • Production of technical documents (Requirements, Design, Testing), often managing a team in these activities.
    • System Design Authority - responsible for the overall design of the system and its compliance to requirements and any applicable legislation.
    • Preparing for and presentation/close out of formal technical milestone reviews (e.g. Preliminary Design Review, Critical Design Review, Factory Acceptance Test, Site Acceptance Test)
    • Software team mentoring – helping developers overcome day to day problems and developing their skills
  • Supporting the preparation of proposals to win new work including:
    • Understanding of user requirements
    • Specification of the solution, trading off alternatives
    • Estimating the effort required to implement the solution (covering the full life-cycle of the project)
    • Writing clear, concise, technical proposals to express the solution and its benefits to the client
  • Software Development
    • On occasion the role may require hands-on development support to projects, including detailed design of modules; implementation; unit testing and acceptance testing.
    • Constructive code reviews of software developed by the team
    • The development languages used are JAVA and C++

 

Qualifications / Experience

Degree qualified (relevant degree with Software Engineering modules, or equivalent experience). Ideally the candidate will have at least 5 years commercial experience of JAVA and/or C++.

 

BS clearance essential. SC clearance preferable.
