European Defence and Security 2012: Commitments, Capabilities and Cash

23-24 January 2012, Chatham House, London, UK

Finmeccanica is giving its support to European Defence and Security 2012, the annual conference of the European Security and Defence Forum, a collaboration led by the International Security Programme, Chatham House, in conjunction with the Istituto Affari Internazionali in Rome, and supported by Finmeccanica.

Security and defence are increasingly intertwined, as security concerns such as cyber security and counter-terrorism sit alongside military commitments in Afghanistan and Libya at the top of the European defence and security agenda. With the Eurozone crisis challenging economic and political stability in Europe, as well as relations and accord between member states, there are a number of implications for European defence and security. Europeans cannot rule out the need to contribute to regional military intervention and stabilisation activity in future. Nor can they afford to ignore global trends which may have long term implications for European interests. Yet where does the balance lie between Europe’s commitments, the capabilities required to meet its shared objectives and its ability to develop or afford a comprehensive European foreign policy?

At a time of both strategic urgency and radical uncertainty, Chatham House’s Annual Security and Defence Conference will gauge the alignment of political, strategic and commercial interests in the field of national and international security and defence. Probing the evolving requirements for European policy-makers, politicians, industries and militaries, it will examine how defence and security priorities and capabilities should be shaped to meet the challenges ahead.
