SELEX Galileo receives €5.3m export order for acoustic weapon location systems

26 January 2011 – SELEX Galileo, a Finmeccanica Company, has been awarded a contract for €5.3m to supply two further Hostile Artillery Location (HALO) systems to an existing non-NATO export customer. More than 25 HALO systems have been sold to customers around the world to date.

HALO is an acoustic weapon locating system. It detects sound waves generated by gun or mortar fire and other explosions and uses data processing techniques to accurately determine the location of enemy weapons. The systems provide troops with timely information on where the enemy is firing from, and data precise enough to engage the threat without risking harm to civilian populations.

HALO systems are in service with six major armed forces internationally including the UK, US and Canada. The systems are used daily on current operations and have shown to be extremely resilient even in extreme temperatures well outside the original specification of the system.

Notes to the editor:
HALO employs unmanned Sensor Posts (SP), comprising clusters of sensitive microphones, to detect acoustic (pressure) waves generated by gun or mortar fire and other explosions. SP data is communicated to the HALO Command Post where it is processed and, almost instantaneously, the location of the source of the sound is presented to the operator.
